Essential Responsibilities & Duties 

Reports to the Chief Inspector.

The Construction Inspector will provide assurance that contractors installations are in compliance with contract. They will be knowledgeable and aware of highway asphalt construction inspection and provide a daily report each day of project delivery by review of contractors and assigned staff’s daily reports to ensure accuracy and their comprehensiveness.  Additionally, the inspector will attend all contractors meetings concerning safety, quality and schedule relative to highway asphalt pavement.

Duties shall include:

  • Along with Daily reports, shall provide narrative reports that describe contractors’ efforts and installations, accidents and incidents or of safety violations
  • Shall perform and report each day an assessment of the project’s safety and compliance by the contractor
  • Review of Barricade reports (monthly & night time inspections) to conform to MUTCD   and project specific traffic control plans and requirements
  • Shall be familiar with TxDOT Standards and Specifications
  • Will work document all contractor’s installation deficiencies and corrections including those deficiencies requiring non-conformance re-work
  • Will review and proofread plans, specifications, codes, shop drawings, submittals, procedures, reports, contractor’s schedules
  • Shall be primarily responsible for accuracy of quantities and quality of installations for each pay period of the contract
  • Shall regularly review contractor’s maintenance of their QA/QC plan including material testing, and supplemental instructions that may arise and bring to Chief Inspector and Project Engineers attention of suspected issues therein
  • Shall review and recommend for approval any related design changes and installations
  • Check and verify all materials stored on and off site for payment as well as materials used in site construction against approved submittals and check and verify the accurate installation of materials in accordance with the design requirements
  • Assist the Chief Inspector with composing and submitting weekly status reports including weekly percentage completion, daily reports, contractor’s site personnel, equipment, and any other actions with regard to the progress of the project
  • Shall maintain related project closeout documents including provision of punch list and its corrections to acceptable conclusion
  • Candidate may assist in marketing and business development efforts for a growing office, including proposal preparation, client development and networking

Minimum Requirements

  • Good verbal and written communication skills, be team-oriented and highly self-motivated, possess good problem-solving skills and be willing to take initiative and work with minimal supervision
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project and Adobe Acrobat
  • Minimum experience – 5 years in construction management
  • Have a valid Texas Driving License
  • Must be able to work on location (on a TDY or permanent basis) in the area of the TxDOT Odessa District
  • Experience with the use of TxDOT’s Site Manager documentation system
  • Have a valid Level 1A asphalt inspection certification issued by TxAPA
  • A valid ACI Grade 1 concrete testing certification is a plus
  • Take and pass all necessary safety training
  • Capable of performing work duties on typical construction and manufacturing sites that could involve climbing ladders, walking on slopes and uneven ground, and being around construction and manufacturing equipment
